The wider labour market is cautious. Early estimates for May to July 2026 suggest UK vacancies fell by 6,000 to 707,000 according to the ONS, and vacancies now sit below pre-pandemic levels in a market the Low Pay Commission describes as 'low hire, low fire' as noted in the Low Pay Commission Report 2025. There are 2.5 unemployed people per vacancy, a ratio that has held steady since late 2025 per ONS vacancy data.
Engineering is not immune, but it holds a strong position. Skills England names digital, engineering and construction occupations most commonly among its priority occupations, many already seeing high recruitment demand and expected to keep growing strongly in the Skills England annual skills report 2026. For automation teams that need mechanical design talent, that means genuine competition for a finite pool, even in a subdued market.
The pressure is uneven across seniority. In engineering, entry-level hiring has fallen to -19% while senior hiring sits at -10%, a nine-percentage-point gap shown in GOV.UK's snapshot of entry-level hiring. So experienced mechanical design engineers, the people who can own a machine build or a production line, are harder to attract than the numbers alone suggest.
Automation rarely lives in one discipline. It pulls in specialist tech skills too, with demand hotspots for AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security as Computer Weekly's tech recruitment outlook sets out. A mechanical design engineer who understands how their work connects to controls, data and safety systems is worth more to an automation team than one who designs in isolation.
One useful planning point: for the engineering profession, the vast majority of new hires come from the resident labour force, indicating low reliance on international recruitment according to GOV.UK's review of professionals in IT and engineering. Build your strategy around UK-based talent first.
Start with the gap in the pipeline. With entry-level engineering hiring down sharply, waiting for ready-made senior candidates is risky. Grow your own where you can: apprenticeships have risen from 3% of AI hires in 2020 to 19% in 2025 per the GOV.UK AI Labour Market Survey 2025, a sign that structured routes into technical work are gaining ground. The same logic applies to mechanical design.
Be sharp about seniority. If you need someone to lead a design, hire senior. If you can develop talent, hire mid-level and train up, because the graduate market is thin and, in the wider tech sector, tightening further as The Register reports from ISE figures. Write the role around the automation problem you are solving, not a generic job title, and set out the tools, standards and systems the person will touch.
