What does the data say about manufacturing and engineering hiring in 2026?

The picture is mixed, and that's the interesting part. Overall UK vacancies are softening: early estimates for April to June 2026 point to a fall of 7,000 to 712,000, with decreases in 10 of the 18 sectors the ONS vacancies bulletin. By August the figure eased again to around 707,000 later ONS data. So on the surface, hiring looks cautious.

Look closer at engineering and a different story appears. Engineering sits among the occupations with the greatest additional employment demand between 2025 and 2030 Skills England's assessment of priority skills to 2030. That supply gap is starkest at the start of the career ladder. In engineering, entry-level hiring has fallen to -19% while senior hiring sits at -10%, a nine-percentage-point gap a GOV.UK snapshot of entry-level hiring. Which roles and dynamics are shaping the engineering talent bench?

Engineering, digital and construction are the occupations that appear most often among the UK's priority skills, and many are already stretched the Skills England annual skills report 2026. In manufacturing that means design, maintenance, quality and process engineering roles competing for the same shrinking pool of trained people.

One dynamic is easy to miss: engineering can't hire its way out of this from abroad.
