What state is IT and technology hiring in right now?

UK technology hiring in 2026 is cautious at the base and hungry at the top. Businesses took a careful approach to headcount through a subdued 2025, but clear demand hotspots remain for specialist skills including AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security Computer Weekly (tech recruitment outlook 2026). That split matters when you read a Microsoft 365 job advert: the roles that stay open longest tend to sit exactly in those specialist areas.

The wider sector is large and active. The updated Digital and Technology sector definition now covers 107,082 companies, roughly 5.2% of all UK companies GOV.UK – Digital and Technologies Sector Economic Statistics. Vacancies are still moving too. In the three months to October 2025, the biggest volume increase in vacancies came in professional, scientific and technical activities, up by 5,000 ONS – Vacancies and jobs in the UK: November 2025. Demand hasn't disappeared. It's concentrated.

The pull-back is real at the junior end. Adzuna data shows a 30% drop in UK entry-level job postings since ChatGPT launched, leaving graduates facing the toughest market since 2018 techUK – What's actually happening with entry-level and graduate jobs?. The tech sector alone cut graduate roles by 46% in a year, with a further 53% drop projected The Register. So when a Microsoft 365 team posts, it's increasingly for someone who can deliver from day one.

Which Microsoft 365 roles and skills are UK teams hiring for?

The roles that stay open reveal the skills that are hard to find. AI is the sharpest example: demand for AI skills rose nearly 200% in a year, with London accounting for 80% of AI-related job postings and nearly two-thirds of all UK technology vacancies The Register (Accenture data). In a Microsoft 365 context, that shows up as Copilot rollouts, Power Platform automation and data governance work.

Design and analysis skills sit right alongside. IT business analysts, architects and systems designers, a group of about 193,000 workers, are in critical demand, with three of five indicators flagged as critical in 2025 Occupations in demand 2025, Explore Education Statistics, GOV.UK. These are the people who plan a tenant migration, redesign SharePoint architecture or map identity and access across Microsoft 365. They're the roles that keep a project moving.

Security is the other constant. A comparison in the AI Labour Market Survey pointed to the Cyber Security Skills 2024 finding that 70% of cyber firms reported at least one hard-to-fill vacancy AI Labour Market Survey 2025 (Gardiner & Theobald), GOV.UK / publishing.service.gov.uk. Every Microsoft 365 estate needs someone across Defender, compliance and conditional access, and that talent is genuinely scarce.

How teams fill these roles is changing too. Apprenticeships have risen from 3% of AI hires in 2020 to 19% in 2025 GOV.UK / DSIT – AI Labour Market Survey 2025 report. That's a signal worth reading: with juniors squeezed out of graduate schemes, employers are building specialist skills through structured routes instead of buying them ready-made.

How do you hire well for a Microsoft 365 team?

Start by naming the outcome, not the tool. A job titled 'Microsoft 365 administrator' can mean five different jobs. Decide whether you need a migration lead, a security specialist, a Power Platform builder or a support engineer, then write the advert around the problem you're solving. Specialist demand is where the market is competitive, so precision helps you reach the right people faster Computer Weekly (tech recruitment outlook 2026).

Be realistic about where talent comes from. For engineering roles, the vast majority of new hires come from the resident labour force, showing low reliance on international recruitment GOV.UK - Professionals in IT and engineering. For the most specialist technology roles, top firms do draw on skilled migrants, sometimes at wages well above the salary threshold Professionals in IT and Engineering (Migration Advisory Committee), GOV.UK / publishing.service.gov.uk. Knowing which pool your role sits in shapes how you search.

Then build for skills, not just experience. With graduate intake down and apprenticeships up GOV.UK / DSIT – AI Labour Market Survey 2025 report, the teams that win are open to people who can prove capability through certifications and hands-on projects rather than years served. And move quickly: skills shortages are cited by over half of manufacturers as the main barrier to AI adoption The Manufacturer / Make UK – AI, Skills and the Future of UK Manufacturing, so the same scarce people are being chased across every sector.
