What is the state of automation hiring in UK manufacturing?

UK manufacturing is automating, but from a low base. The UK ranks just 24th in global robotics density, and targeted innovation and digital investment could add £150 billion to the UK's GDP by 2035 Making it Smarter: Global Lessons for Accelerating Automation and Digital Adoption in UK Manufacturing - Make UK. That gap is well documented: the UK used only 101 robots per 10,000 workers in 2020, substantially lagging international peers Smart Machines Strategy 2035 - GOV.UK.

Deburring and finishing cells sit right in this shift. These are repetitive, precise tasks that robots handle well, and as firms install them they change the shape of their teams rather than shrink them. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cited automation and half (50%) cited wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK – 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap.

The appetite is clearly there. But adoption is still early: only 2% of manufacturers say AI is widely embedded across their operations, and over 50% cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption The Manufacturer / Make UK – AI, Skills and the Future of UK Manufacturing.

Which roles grow when finishing cells are automated?

When a deburring or finishing cell goes in, the work moves up the skills ladder. You need people to program, maintain, calibrate and quality-check the cell, plus those who can read the data it produces. That points to robotics technicians, automation engineers, maintenance specialists and quality roles, all needing the cognitive skills that 74% of manufacturers expect to be in higher demand by 2030 Make UK – 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap.

Many of these roles come from within. Some 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation, and that figure increases for firms with more than 1,000 employees Make UK Executive Survey 2026. In other words, the operator running a manual finishing station today can become the person overseeing the automated cell tomorrow.

The pressure to fill these roles is real. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year Make UK – Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025.

How do you hire well for automation roles?

Start by separating what you can grow from what you must buy in. With 40% of manufacturers planning to upskill existing staff for redeployment Make UK Executive Survey 2026, map the people you already have against the roles a finishing cell creates. Redeploying a trusted operator into a technician role is often faster than hiring cold, and it keeps your process knowledge in house.

For the roles you do hire externally, write for skills, not just job titles. Because 74% of manufacturers expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to rise by 2030 Make UK – 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap, screen for problem-solving, data literacy and a willingness to learn new systems, not only hands-on machine experience.

Then act quickly. Skills shortages (75%), recruitment (36%) and talent retention (32%) are manufacturers' top barriers to growth Barclays Corporate – Skills shortage in UK Manufacturing. In a tight market, a slow, unclear process loses good people to faster employers, so keep your shortlist focused and your interviews prompt.
