Manufacturing jobs are shifting fast, and the skills that keep a plant safe are shifting with them. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cite automation and half (50%) cite wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, according to Make UK's 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap report. The same report finds 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK's 2030 Skills report.
That matters for safety. Near-miss triage is not a checklist task. It is cognitive work: reading a vague report, spotting the pattern behind it, and judging whether a line keeps running or stops. As more work becomes automated and digital, the human jobs that remain lean harder on exactly this kind of judgement.
The people doing triage are rarely full-time safety specialists. They are shift leaders, line supervisors and experienced operators who make the first call when a near-miss gets logged. Their decisions set the tone for whether reporting feels safe or feels like paperwork. Get that wrong and the signals dry up.
Automation is reshaping who does this work. 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation, and this figure rises for firms with more than 1,000 employees, per the Make UK Executive Survey 2026. Redeployed people bring deep plant knowledge, but they may need support to build the judgement that triage demands.
There is a wider pull on the same skills, too. Over 50% of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption, and only 2% say AI is widely embedded across their operations, according to The Manufacturer's coverage of a Make UK report. The analytical people who could triage near-misses well are the same people firms want for AI and digital projects.
Start by hiring for judgement, not just certificates. A qualification tells you someone knows the rules. It does not tell you how they decide under pressure when a report is thin and a line is waiting. Build your assessment around that gap.
Then support the hire once they land. With 74% of manufacturers expecting demand for cognitive skills to rise by 2030 Make UK's 2030 Skills report, the right onboarding and mentoring turn a capable hire into a confident one who makes sound calls fast.
