What does the UK manufacturing hiring market look like right now?

It's tight, and the pressure sits on specialist technical roles. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year, according to Make UK's Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025. The strain reaches across engineering too: 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, with technical and specialist sustainability skills topping the list, reports the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Manufacturers feel it at the top of their own risk list. Skills shortages (75%), recruitment (36%) and talent retention (32%) rank as manufacturers' top barriers to growth, according to Barclays Corporate's analysis of the skills shortage in UK manufacturing. Building laser systems, the precision work behind cutting, welding and measurement, sits right inside that hard-to-fill, high-value band. That's exactly why it's now a career worth planning for, not a niche.

Which roles and skills are shaping the future of manufacturing?

The demand signal is clear and long term. Occupations in Digital, Adult Social Care, Construction and Engineering have the greatest additional employment demand between 2025 and 2030, according to Skills England's assessment of priority skills to 2030. Digital, engineering and construction occupations appear most commonly among priority occupations, many already experiencing high recruitment demand and expected to keep growing strongly, adds Skills England's annual skills report 2026.

The content of the work is changing too. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cited automation and half (50%) cited wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030, reports Make UK's 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap report. Laser systems sit at that intersection of hardware and software, which is why problem-solving and digital fluency now matter as much as the hands-on build.

There's a catch worth watching at the entry point. In Engineering, entry-level hiring has fallen to -19% while senior hiring sits at -10%, a 9-percentage-point gap, according to GOV.UK's snapshot of entry-level hiring in the UK. If employers want laser technicians in five years, they need to build a route in now.

How do you hire well for specialist manufacturing roles?

Start by widening the pool, not narrowing the spec. With technical skills topping the shortage list, insisting on an exact match to one laser platform can shrink your options fast. Hire for the transferable foundations, optics, electronics, controls and a willingness to learn, then train for the specific system.

Build from within as well as outside. 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation, and this figure increases for firms with more than 1,000 employees, according to Make UK's Executive Survey 2026. Pairing external hires with internal upskilling gives you two routes to the same skills, and it helps with the retention challenge too.

Then move quickly. In a market where 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, as the Institution of Engineering and Technology reports, the best people don't wait around. A clear role, a fast first response and a short time to interview make the difference between a shortlist and an empty chair.
