What does manufacturing hiring look like right now?

UK manufacturing is at a turning point. Additive manufacturing, often called 3D printing, is moving from prototype labs onto the shop floor, and it needs people who can design for it, run it and maintain it. But the talent to do that is thin on the ground. Over half of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to adopting AI, and only 2% say AI is widely embedded across their operations according to a 2026 report from The Manufacturer and Make UK.

That gap is the headline. Engineering sits among the occupations with the greatest additional employment demand between 2025 and 2030 Skills England's assessment of priority skills to 2030 finds, and the 2026 update confirms engineering and digital roles appear most commonly among priority occupations, many already seeing high recruitment demand and expected to keep growing Skills England's 2026 annual skills report notes. Which roles and skills does additive manufacturing create?

Additive manufacturing changes the job, not just the machine. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cited automation and half (50%) cited wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills, the ability to solve problems and learn quickly, to rise by 2030 Make UK's 2030 Skills report shows. In practice that means design-for-additive engineers, machine operators who read CAD files, materials specialists and technicians who blend mechanical know-how with software.

The good news for plants: this talent is mostly home-grown.
