The picture is uneven. But the sector remains large and central to the economy. And demand has not vanished, it has concentrated. At the other end, the entry route has narrowed sharply. Start with the work, not the job title. Compete on more than pay. Top firms can pay sizeable wages to skilled migrants for scarce roles, pushing pay well above salary thresholds, while pay for many engineering professionals stays broadly in line with the UK average Professionals in IT and Engineering (Migration Advisory Committee), GOV.UK / publishing.service.gov.uk. If you cannot always win on salary, win on the interesting problem, the security clearance pathway and clear routes to grow.
Build your own talent, too. With graduate intakes shrinking, apprenticeships are becoming a serious pipeline for AI and cloud skills.
