What state is UK IT and technology hiring in right now?

The picture is split. Demand for specialist skills is strong, while entry-level routes have narrowed sharply. Demand for AI skills rose nearly 200 percent in a year, with London accounting for 80 percent of AI-related job postings and nearly two-thirds of all technology vacancies in the UK The Register, citing Accenture data. At the same time, businesses stayed cautious through a subdued 2025, concentrating hiring around demand hotspots such as AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security Computer Weekly's tech recruitment outlook.

The sector itself is large and active. The updated Digital and Technology definition covers 107,082 companies, about 5.2 percent of all UK companies GOV.UK Digital and Technologies Sector Economic Statistics. And demand keeps showing up in the wider labour market: in August to October 2025 the largest volume increase in vacancies was in professional, scientific and technical activities, up by 5,000 the ONS Vacancies and jobs bulletin. So the appetite for skilled people is real, even where overall hiring is measured.

Which roles and skills are shaping the service desk brief?

The service desk role is widening. As AI agents handle more first-line tickets, support teams take on the job of supervising those agents: checking their answers, correcting errors and escalating what the agent gets wrong. That sits on top of the specialist demand already in the market. IT business analysts, architects and systems designers, a group of around 193,000 workers, are among the occupations in critical demand, with three of five indicators flagged critical in 2025 GOV.UK's Occupations in demand 2025 data.

Cyber security remains a persistent pressure point too: 70 percent of cyber firms reported at least one hard-to-fill vacancy the AI Labour Market Survey 2025. Meanwhile the traditional way in has shrunk. The UK tech sector cut graduate jobs by 46 percent in the past year, with a further 53 percent drop projected figures from the Institute of Student Employers reported by The Register, and Adzuna has seen a 30 percent drop in UK entry-level job postings since ChatGPT launched techUK's analysis of entry-level and graduate jobs.

That narrowing of entry routes matters for service desks, which have long been where people start a tech career. For agent supervision specifically, the useful profile blends support fundamentals with judgement: reading an agent's output, spotting where it drifts and knowing when to step in.

How do you hire well for agent supervision on the service desk?

Start with the outcome, not the label. Write the brief around what the person will actually oversee: which agents, which ticket types, which escalation points. Test for judgement, not just tool familiarity, because the core of supervision is deciding when the agent is wrong and what to do about it. Skills gaps are the real constraint here, not headcount: over 50 percent of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption Make UK's report via The Manufacturer, a warning that applies well beyond one sector.

Build your pipeline deliberately. With entry-level postings down, apprenticeships and internal moves are a sensible way to grow supervision skills you can't easily buy in. Look local first where you can: for engineering roles the vast majority of new hires come from the resident labour force, showing low reliance on international recruitment GOV.UK's Professionals in IT and Engineering review. And move quickly on the specialists in shortest supply, because demand hotspots in AI, data and cyber security are set to drive the market into 2026 Computer Weekly's outlook.
