What does the UK software hiring market look like now?

The market is cautious but far from quiet. Businesses took a measured approach to hiring through 2025, yet demand stayed strong for specialist skills in AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security Computer Weekly (tech recruitment outlook 2026). That pattern shows up in the vacancy data too: the largest volume increase in vacancies fell in the professional, scientific and technical activities sector, up by 5,000 in the three months to October 2025 ONS – Vacancies and jobs in the UK: November 2025.

Some technical roles sit in genuine short supply. IT business analysts, architects and systems designers, a group of around 193,000 workers, rank among the occupations in critical demand, with three of five indicators flagged critical in 2025 Occupations in demand 2025, Explore Education Statistics, GOV.UK. When the people you want are scarce, a woolly brief costs you time you cannot spare.

How are software roles and career levels shifting?

The shape of the ladder is changing at the bottom. UK entry-level job postings have dropped 30% since ChatGPT launched, and graduates face the toughest market since 2018 techUK – What's actually happening with entry-level and graduate jobs?. The tech sector alone cut graduate roles by 46% in a year, with a further 53% fall projected The Register. So a role labelled junior in 2022 may now expect far more.

At the same time, new routes into skilled work are opening. Apprenticeships have grown from 3% of AI hires in 2020 to 19% in 2025 GOV.UK / DSIT – AI Labour Market Survey 2025 report. Employers still report real difficulty filling technical and specialist roles: 76% of engineering and technology employers struggle to recruit for key positions Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). A precise seniority label helps both sides read the same role the same way.

How do seniority labels build a lean software brief?

Start with the label, then let it discipline everything below it. Naming a role junior, mid, senior, staff or principal sets a shared reference point for scope, autonomy and the depth of experience you expect. Once the level is fixed, you can strip a bloated wish list back to the few skills that actually define success at that level.

  • Lead with the level, so the first line of the brief tells someone whether the role fits them.
  • Match the label to real scope: how much autonomy, mentoring and decision-making the person owns.
  • Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves, and keep only the skills a person at that level truly needs.
  • Be explicit about seniority creep: if a junior title now expects senior work, rename it or reset the brief.
  • Signal the route in, so apprentices and career changers know when they can apply.

This matters most where skills are scarce. In cyber security, for example, the UK workforce sits at around 143,000 people and is growing only moderately, from 2% in 2022 to 5% in 2024 Cyber security skills in the UK labour market 2025 - GOV.UK. When the pool is small, a brief that clearly states the level stops you chasing the wrong people and losing the right ones.
