How healthy is defence-and-security hiring right now?

Hiring in the sector is growing fast, and the numbers behind that growth are hard to ignore. More than 1,700 new jobs are being created across the UK defence sector following at least £1.4 billion in foreign direct investment committed since July 2024, according to a 2025 GOV.UK announcement. That kind of capital rarely arrives on its own. It brings new sites, new programmes and, crucially, new entry routes such as apprenticeships and placements.

The wider employment picture is just as strong. MOD expenditure with industry supported a total of 272,000 direct jobs in 2023/24, an increase of 11% compared to the previous financial year, as reported in GOV.UK's MOD supported employment estimates for 2023/24. For context, the total number of MOD-supported UK jobs reached 239,000 in 2022/23, an increase of 6% on the previous financial year, according to the equivalent estimates for 2022/23. The direction of travel is clear: more roles, year on year.

So what does this mean for you? When investment and headcount climb together, demand for talent rises faster than the usual pipeline can supply it. That is exactly why apprenticeships and placements are widening now.

What roles and hiring dynamics is the deal creating?

New investment doesn't only create senior engineering posts. It opens the bottom of the ladder too, funding apprenticeships, work placements and early-careers routes that bring fresh people into the sector. The defence sector continued to be an attractive employer, with surveyed recruitment growing by 17.8% in 2022, according to GOV.UK's 2024 analysis of the sector's economic contribution. Growth on that scale needs a steady flow of trainees, not just experienced hires.

Think about the shape of the demand. Manufacturing and assembly, software and cyber, systems engineering, project delivery and skilled trades all feature heavily. Apprenticeships feed many of these at once, which is why a single deal can widen placements across several disciplines at the same time.

The dynamic to watch is competition. With the sector adding jobs each year, employers are chasing the same early-career talent. The ones who plan ahead, and who treat apprentices as a future workforce rather than a quick fix, tend to win.

How do you hire well in defence-and-security?

Start with security clearance early. Many defence roles need vetting that takes time, so map clearance requirements for each position before you advertise. It saves weeks later and keeps offers from falling through.

  • Define the role against the actual work, not a generic template, so you attract people with the right skills rather than the right buzzwords.
  • Build an apprenticeship and placement pipeline now, linking with colleges and training providers so you have people ready as programmes expand.
  • Flag clearance and eligibility requirements in the advert so applicants self-select early.
  • Keep your process quick and communicative, because strong early-career applicants receive several offers.
  • Track your hires from different routes so you learn which channels deliver people who stay and progress.

Above all, move at the pace the market demands. When the whole sector is hiring, a slow process is the single biggest reason good people slip away.
