

Hiring in manufacturing is tight, and it's shaping how much any single role can safely carry. The gap is measurable. That points to a practical model: hire for solid technical fundamentals now, then build the newer automation and data skills through structured development rather than expecting them fully formed on day one.
Start by separating must-have from nice-to-have. A workable plant technician remit usually centres on planned and reactive maintenance, basic electrical and mechanical fault-finding, and involvement in continuous improvement. Automation programming, data analysis and cross-site responsibility are genuine skills, but each one you add narrows your pool and lengthens your search.
Weigh that against how competitive the wider technical market is. the ONS vacancies bulletin for November 2025 recorded the largest volume increase in vacancies in professional, scientific and technical activities, up by 5,000 in the three months to October.
