

Demand is high and hard to meet. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy an estimated £6bn in lost output every year, according to Make UK's Industrial Strategy Skills Commission report 2025. Manufacturers are clear about what is driving it. Six in ten (59%) cite automation and half (50%) cite wider digitalisation as trends changing the jobs and skills they need, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to rise by 2030, per Make UK's 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap report. Skills shortages already top the list of barriers to growth for 75% of manufacturers, with recruitment (36%) and retention (32%) close behind, according to Barclays Corporate's analysis of the UK manufacturing skills shortage.
The pull towards these roles is national. Skills England names engineering among the occupations with the greatest additional employment demand between 2025 and 2030, in its Assessment of priority skills to 2030, and its Skills England annual skills report 2026 confirms engineering occupations keep appearing among priority roles already facing high recruitment demand.
