What does UK manufacturing hiring look like right now?

Demand is high and the talent pool is tight. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year according to Make UK's Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025. Those gaps are not evenly spread. Skills shortages sit at the top of manufacturers' barriers to growth at 75%, followed by recruitment at 36% and talent retention at 32% in Barclays Corporate's analysis of the skills shortage in UK manufacturing.

Technical roles are the hardest to fill. 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, with technical and specialist sustainability skills topping the list the Institution of Engineering and Technology reports. Before you can hire against these pressures, you need a clear picture of what each job level actually requires today.

How do plant job levels map to real manufacturing roles?

Start with the work, not the title. A plant structure usually runs from entry-level operators and assemblers, through skilled technicians and maintenance engineers, into supervisors and shift leaders, and up to plant and operations managers. The job each level does is shifting fast, so your map has to reflect current skills, not the ones the role needed five years ago.

Automation and digital tools are rewriting the requirements at every grade. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cite automation and half (50%) cite wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK's 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap report found. In practice, that means even shop-floor levels now need problem-solving and data skills alongside hands-on craft.

The entry-level end deserves close attention. In engineering, entry-level hiring has fallen to -19% while senior hiring sits at -10%, a nine-percentage-point gap a GOV.UK snapshot of entry-level hiring shows. If you stop hiring at the bottom of your structure, you erode the pipeline that feeds your technician and supervisor levels later.

Retention pressure runs across the map too. 79% of UK technical professionals plan to change employers in 2026 Rise Technical's 2025/26 Insights Report, surveying over 500 employers and 1,000 candidates, found. So mapping levels is not a one-off exercise. It is the base for a hiring plan you refresh as roles and people move.

How do you hire well against these job levels?

Write each role around the skills the job needs now, then decide whether to build or buy. 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation, a figure that rises for firms with more than 1,000 employees the Make UK Executive Survey 2026 reports. Upskilling your current team covers some levels; targeted external hiring covers the rest.

Prioritise the levels where shortages bite hardest and where they slow everything else down. Over 50% of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption, and only 2% say AI is widely embedded across their operations a Make UK report covered by The Manufacturer found. Getting the right technical people in place at the right levels unblocks the wider changes you want to make.

  • Define each level by the skills the role needs today, not its historic title.
  • Protect entry-level hiring to keep your technician and supervisor pipeline healthy.
  • Pair external hiring with upskilling so you fill gaps and grow your own.
  • Move quickly on technical roles, where competition and churn are highest.
