Strategy and Delivery Lead

What is the state of IT and technology services hiring right now?

The UK technology sector is big and still central to the economy. The updated definition counts 107,082 digital and technology companies, around 5.2% of all UK companies GOV.UK – Digital and Technologies Sector Economic Statistics. That scale matters, because as managed services move from billing time to promising results, the people delivering those results become the product.

Hiring in 2025 has been cautious but pointed. Businesses took a careful approach against a subdued economy, yet there were clear demand hotspots for specialist skills in AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security Computer Weekly (tech recruitment outlook 2026). That pattern shows up in the official numbers too: professional, scientific and technical activities saw the largest volume increase in vacancies from August to October 2025, up by 5,000 ONS – Vacancies and jobs in the UK: November 2025.

There's a squeeze at the entry point, though. UK entry-level job postings have fallen by 30% since ChatGPT launched, leaving graduates facing the toughest market since 2018 techUK – What's actually happening with entry-level and graduate jobs?. The tech sector cut graduate roles by 46% in a year, with a further 53% drop projected The Register. Outcome-led delivery rewards proven capability, so demand is concentrating on people who can produce results now.

Which roles and skills matter most in outcome-based delivery?

When a contract promises an outcome, the skills that carry risk rise to the top. Demand for AI skills increased nearly 200% in a year, and London alone accounts for 80% of AI-related job postings and nearly two-thirds of all UK technology vacancies The Register (Accenture data). That concentration tells you where the hardest, highest-stakes work sits.

Design and architecture roles are just as critical. IT business analysts, architects and systems designers, around 193,000 workers, sit among the occupations in critical demand, flagged on three of five indicators in 2025 Occupations in demand 2025, Explore Education Statistics, GOV.UK. These are the people who translate a client outcome into something a team can actually build and run.

Security is the other pressure point. The UK cyber security workforce stands at roughly 143,000 people, with growth accelerating from 2% in 2022 to 5% in 2024 Cyber security skills in the UK labour market 2025 - GOV.UK. Even so, 70% of cyber firms reported at least one hard-to-fill vacancy AI Labour Market Survey 2025 (Gardiner & Theobald), GOV.UK / publishing.service.gov.uk. Where you promise uptime and protection, cyber capability is non-negotiable.

How teams build that capability is changing too. Apprenticeships have risen from 3% of AI hires in 2020 to 19% in 2025 GOV.UK / DSIT – AI Labour Market Survey 2025 report, a sign that firms are growing specialists as well as buying them in.

How do you hire well for outcome-based managed services?

Start by hiring for the outcome, not the seat. Write the role around what the client is paying you to deliver, then work back to the skills that carry the risk: AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber lead the current demand hotspots Computer Weekly (tech recruitment outlook 2026). A sharper brief means a sharper shortlist.

Second, plan for scarcity in the roles that decide success. Architects and systems designers are in critical demand Occupations in demand 2025, Explore Education Statistics, GOV.UK, and most engineering hires come from the resident labour force rather than international recruitment GOV.UK - Professionals in IT and engineering. Move quickly and keep people engaged, because the best don't stay on the market long.

Third, build as well as buy. With apprenticeships now a real share of AI hiring GOV.UK / DSIT – AI Labour Market Survey 2025 report and the graduate market tight The Register, a mix of experienced specialists and grown-from-within talent gives you resilience. Outcome contracts run for years, so your team needs a pipeline, not just a headcount.
