What is the state of UK technology and AI hiring right now?

The market is splitting in two. On one side, demand for specialist skills keeps climbing. On the other, the traditional graduate route is shrinking fast. Against a subdued 2025 economic backdrop, businesses took a cautious approach to hiring, yet clear demand hotspots opened up for AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security, according to Computer Weekly's tech recruitment outlook.

The scale of demand for AI skills is striking. Demand for AI skills rose nearly 200% in a year, with London accounting for 80% of AI-related job postings and nearly two-thirds of all technology vacancies in the UK, The Register reports, citing Accenture data. That concentration tells you where the pressure sits, and why the brief for a technology hire now reads very differently than it did two years ago.

The entry-level picture is far tougher. Adzuna has seen a 30% drop in UK entry-level job postings since ChatGPT launched, with graduates facing the toughest job market since 2018, techUK reports. The UK tech sector cut graduate jobs by 46% in the past year, with a further 53% drop projected, The Register notes, citing Institute of Student Employers figures. The roles that survive are the ones that add judgement to the machine.

Which roles and skills are driving the shift?

Context engineering is the discipline of feeding AI systems the right information, structure and constraints so they produce accurate, useful output at work. Think of it as designing what a model sees, not just what you ask it. That skill sits across data, AI and software roles, and it is exactly the specialist territory employers are chasing.

Cyber security shows how deep the demand runs. There are roughly 143,000 individuals in the UK cyber security workforce, with growth accelerating from 2% in 2022 to 5% in 2024, GOV.UK's cyber security skills report finds. And 70% of cyber firms reported at least one hard-to-fill vacancy, according to the AI Labour Market Survey 2025. Secure, well-governed AI systems need people who understand both the model and the risk.

The way people enter the field is changing too. Apprenticeships have risen from 3% of AI hires in 2020 to 19% in 2025, the DSIT AI Labour Market Survey reports. As the graduate funnel narrows, employers are building context-engineering talent through hands-on routes rather than waiting for it to arrive fully formed.

Retention is the other side of the coin. 79% of UK technical professionals plan to change employers in 2026, Rise Technical's 2025/26 Insights Report finds. When your best AI-literate people are open to moving, the brief is as much about keeping talent as winning it.

Start by rewriting the brief. Skills shortages are real: 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, with technical and specialist skills topping the list, the IET reports. Widen your routes in. Most engineering hires come from the resident labour force, showing low reliance on international recruitment, GOV.UK notes, while top firms can still pay sizeable wages to skilled migrants, the Migration Advisory Committee found. Blend experienced hires, apprenticeships and internal moves rather than betting on one channel.

Do not abandon early talent. Entry-level engineering hiring has fallen to -19% while senior hiring sits at -10%, a nine-percentage-point gap, GOV.UK's entry-level snapshot shows. That gap is a risk: if nobody hires juniors now, the specialist pipeline dries up later. A small, deliberate early-career intake protects your future context-engineering bench.
