Agent orchestration: the skill UK IT teams hire for

Agent orchestration, the practice of designing, connecting and supervising multiple AI agents so they work together reliably, is fast becoming a core skill UK IT teams hire for as AI demand climbs and generalist coding roles thin out.

What does UK tech and AI hiring look like right now?

Two things are happening at once. Demand for AI skills is climbing sharply, yet the overall market stays cautious. Demand for AI skills rose by nearly 200 percent in a single year, with London accounting for 80 percent of AI-related job postings and close to two-thirds of all technology vacancies in the UK, according to Accenture figures reported by The Register. That's a concentrated, fast-moving pull for specialist talent.

The backdrop, though, is subdued. The wider labour market is best described as 'low hire, low fire', with weaker recruitment and vacancies below pre-pandemic levels, as set out in the Low Pay Commission Report 2025. Even so, specialist tech skills are the exception. Businesses took a cautious approach through 2025, but clear demand hotspots remain for AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security, per the Computer Weekly tech recruitment outlook for 2026. And the sector itself is large: the updated Digital and Technology definition covers 107,082 companies, some 5.2 percent of all UK companies, according to GOV.UK Digital and Technologies sector statistics.

Which roles are rising, and which are fading?

The shape of tech hiring is changing at both ends. At entry level, the ground has shifted fast. Adzuna has recorded a 30 percent drop in UK entry-level job postings since ChatGPT launched, with graduates facing the toughest market since 2018, as reported by techUK. The UK tech sector cut graduate jobs by 46 percent in a year, with a further 53 percent drop projected, according to Institute of Student Employers figures via The Register.

Higher-skill, systems-level roles are pulling the other way. IT business analysts, architects and systems designers, some 193,000 workers, sit among the occupations in critical demand, with three of five indicators flagged critical, per GOV.UK Occupations in demand 2025. That's telling. Agent orchestration is an architecture skill: it's about designing how components talk to each other, handling failures and keeping systems safe, not writing a single script. It sits squarely in the roles the market is short of.

Routes in are also broadening. And demand keeps building at the top: the professional, scientific and technical activities sector saw the largest volume rise in vacancies, up 5,000, in August to October 2025, per the ONS vacancies bulletin for November 2025.

How do you hire well for agent orchestration?

Start by hiring for judgement, not tool knowledge. Orchestration is about how someone reasons through a system: how they connect agents, plan for failure, and keep humans in the loop. Ask candidates to walk you through a real workflow they've built, where it broke, and how they made it reliable. That surfaces the thinking a keyword-matched CV can't.

Widen the entry routes, too. With apprenticeships now close to a fifth of AI hires per the DSIT AI Labour Market Survey 2025, and graduate openings down sharply per Institute of Student Employers figures via The Register, the strongest orchestration talent won't always arrive with a conventional CV. Build from your resident workforce where you can: for engineering professionals, the vast majority of new hires come from the resident labour force, indicating low reliance on international recruitment, according to GOV.UK's review of professionals in IT and engineering.

Finally, move at the pace of the demand hotspots. Specialist skills like AI and cyber security stay hard to fill, and 70 percent of cyber firms reported at least one hard-to-fill vacancy in the comparison drawn by the AI Labour Market Survey 2025. When the right person appears, a slow process loses them. Define the skill clearly, screen for reasoning, and keep your steps tight.
