UK counter-drone roles: an early-stage hiring picture

UK counter-drone programmes are opening new technical roles across sensing, software and systems integration, but the field is still early-stage, so hiring runs ahead of a small, specialist talent pool.

What does UK defence hiring look like right now?

Demand is climbing, and money is following it. The defence sector was an attractive employer, with surveyed recruitment growing by 17.8% in 2022 Defence sector continues contributing significantly to UK economy - GOV.UK. That growth sits on a large base of employment. MOD expenditure with industry supported a total of 272,000 direct jobs in 2023/24, an increase of 11% compared to the previous financial year MOD supported employment estimates 2023/24 - GOV.UK.

The trend is not a one-off. The total number of MOD-supported UK jobs reached 239,000 in 2022/23, an increase of 6% on the previous financial year MOD supported employment estimates 2022/23 - GOV.UK. Fresh investment is adding to it too. More than 1,700 new jobs are being created across the UK defence sector following at least £1.4 billion in foreign direct investment committed since July 2024 Defence dividend delivers thousands of UK jobs following exceptional foreign investment - GOV.UK. Counter-drone work is a small, fast-moving slice of that wider picture.

Which counter-drone roles are emerging, and why is the field still early?

Counter-drone, or counter-unmanned aerial systems, is the work of detecting, tracking and defeating small drones. It draws on several disciplines at once: radar and radio-frequency sensing, electro-optical and acoustic detection, signal processing, machine learning, and the software that fuses all of it into a single operator view. New roles are appearing in each of these areas, from sensing engineers and RF specialists to data scientists, systems integrators and test engineers.

Why does it still feel early-stage? The threat itself is recent and changing quickly, so requirements shift between programmes. Standards are settling rather than settled, and much of the talent sits in adjacent fields such as telecoms, aerospace and cyber rather than in a ready-made counter-drone workforce. That is set against a growing defence sector overall, where surveyed recruitment grew by 17.8% in 2022 Defence sector continues contributing significantly to UK economy - GOV.UK. The result is real hiring demand chasing a small, specialist pool.

How do you hire well for an early-stage technical field?

Hire for the ability to learn, not just the exact job title. Because pure counter-drone experience is scarce, the strongest candidates often come from RF engineering, signal processing, robotics, cyber or aerospace, and pick up the domain fast. Write the role around the problem you are solving rather than a fixed tool list, and be clear about which skills are essential and which you can develop on the job.

  • Map the real skill: sensing, signal processing, software integration or test, then hire to that gap rather than a generic engineer brief.
  • Open the funnel to adjacent sectors such as telecoms, aerospace and cyber, where transferable skills already exist.
  • Move quickly and communicate clearly, because specialist candidates get multiple approaches.
  • Plan for security clearance timelines early so a strong hire does not stall at the final step.
  • Build for growth: today's small team becomes tomorrow's programme, so hire people who can mentor as the field matures.

Speed matters most when the pool is small. A slow, unclear process loses the few people who fit. A tight brief, fast feedback and honest conversation about the mission tend to win.

Where do we fit for counter-drone hiring?

When roles are specialist and the pool is small, reach and speed count. We search a database of 15 million candidates to find people with the sensing, software and systems skills these programmes need, including talent in adjacent fields ready to move across. Our recruitment agent manages recruitment end to end for 8% on a successful hire, with no monthly fee and no upfront cost, through Reed.ai. If you are building a counter-drone team, tell us the role and let us surface a shortlist.
