Manufacturers want the gains that AI and automation promise, but the people to make them stick are scarce. Over 50% of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption, and only 2% say AI is widely embedded across their operations The Manufacturer and Make UK's 2026 report on AI, skills and the future of UK manufacturing. So the data is arriving faster than the judgement to act on it.
The prize for closing that gap is large. The UK ranks just 24th in global robotics density, and targeted innovation and digital investment could add £150 billion to the UK's GDP by 2035 Make UK's 2025 report, Making it Smarter. That ambition only lands if plants can hire the people who read the data and turn it into higher yield.
When agents monitor temperatures, cycle times and defect rates in real time, the work shifts from spotting problems to deciding what to do about them. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cited automation and half (50%) cited wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK's 2024 report, 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap. In plain terms, employers want people who can reason, interpret and judge, not just operate.
Many firms plan to grow these skills from within. 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation, and that figure increases for firms with more than 1,000 employees the Make UK Executive Survey 2026. The challenge is that upskilling takes time, and the data is already flowing.
Start by writing the job around the decision, not the machine. The gap is utilisation as much as hardware: UK utilisation of industrial robots substantially lags internationally, at only 101 robots per 10,000 workers in 2020 the Government's Smart Machines Strategy 2035. So the person you want can read what a line is telling them and change a setting, a schedule or a process to lift output.
Speed matters here. When more than half of manufacturers already point to skills shortages as the barrier to adoption The Manufacturer and Make UK, a slow hiring process risks losing the few people who can do the work.
