Manufacturing is the engine room of the West Midlands, and the logistics roles that keep it moving are among the hardest to fill. The scale of the problem is national. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year according to Make UK's Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025.
The wider vacancy picture is cooling, but demand hasn't gone away. Total estimated vacancies were down by 76,000 (9.5%) in December 2025 to February 2026 from a year earlier, decreasing in 15 of the 18 industry sectors the ONS reports. So why do manufacturing and logistics employers still feel the squeeze? Because the shortage isn't about volume. It's about finding people with the right skills.
Employers tell the same story. Manufacturers' top barriers to growth are skills shortages (75%), recruitment (36%) and talent retention (32%) a Barclays Corporate study found. For logistics teams in the West Midlands, that means the race is less about posting more adverts and more about reaching the right people first.
Logistics inside manufacturing covers a broad span: warehouse operatives, transport planners, stock controllers, supply chain coordinators and the technical staff who keep automated systems running. The technical end is where the pinch is sharpest. 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, with technical and specialist sustainability skills topping the list the Institution of Engineering and Technology reports.
The shape of these jobs is changing too. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cited automation and half (50%) cited wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK's 2030 Skills report found. In practice, that means warehouse and logistics roles increasingly blend hands-on work with systems knowledge, problem solving and adaptability.
Demand isn't limited to manufacturing either, which widens the competition for the same talent. In August to October 2025, the largest volume increase in vacancies was in the professional scientific and technical activities sector, which rose by 5,000 the ONS reports. The people who can run modern logistics operations are in demand across several sectors at once.
Speed matters more than ever when good people have options. The first step is a clear, honest role description: the shift pattern, the systems someone will use, the progression on offer. Candidates self-select faster when they know what the day actually looks like.
Retention is part of hiring well, too. With talent retention named a top-three barrier by manufacturers in the Barclays Corporate study, the care you show during recruitment sets the tone for how long someone stays.
