What state is UK manufacturing hiring in right now?

The demand for skilled people is real and it's expensive to ignore. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year according to Make UK's Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025. That gap sits on top of a wider automation shift, and the two are connected: the same firms that want to inspect output faster also need people who can run the systems doing the inspecting.

Skills, not technology, are the sticking point. Over 50% of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption, and only 2% say AI is widely embedded across their operations as reported by The Manufacturer on Make UK's 2026 AI and skills research. So while vision agents can now watch a line and flag defects, most plants still lack the people to deploy and trust them at scale.

Which roles and skills are changing as vision agents inspect output?

When an agent handles the first pass of visual inspection, the human job moves up a level. Instead of eyeballing every part, people set the standard, review the hard calls the model flags and retrain it when materials or tolerances change. Vision review becomes a craft: knowing what good output looks like and teaching a system to recognise it.

The data points the same way. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cited automation and half (50%) cited wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 per Make UK's 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap report. Those cognitive skills, judgement, problem-solving and pattern recognition, are exactly what vision review now asks for.

Many firms plan to build these skills from within. 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation, a figure that increases for firms with more than 1,000 employees Make UK's Executive Survey 2026 found. Redeploying a line inspector into a model-tuning role keeps hard-won product knowledge in the building.

How do you hire well for AI-assisted quality inspection?

Start with the reality that adoption is early. The UK ranks just 24th in global robotics density, and targeted innovation and digital investment could add £150 billion to the UK's GDP by 2035 Make UK's Making it Smarter report notes. That means most plants are hiring for a capability they're still building, so look for adaptability over a long checklist of tools.

Prioritise people who combine domain knowledge with comfort around data. The UK used only 101 robots per 10,000 workers in 2020, substantially lagging international peers the Smart Machines Strategy 2035 reports, citing the International Federation of Robotics, so the competitive edge often comes from the people who can close that gap quickly, not just the kit itself.

  • Write for the craft: describe the judgement calls a vision reviewer makes, not just the software they touch.
  • Value transferable skills: someone who knows your product and can learn to read model output beats a pure technologist who doesn't know the parts.
  • Consider redeployment first, then hire externally for the gaps your current team cannot fill.
  • Move quickly on strong applicants, because the people who can deploy and trust these systems are in short supply across the sector.
