The first thing a live data engineering role prices in is scarcity, and the signal is loud. Demand for AI skills rose nearly 200 percent in a year, according to The Register, reporting Accenture data. That surge sits inside a wider pattern. Against a subdued 2025 economic backdrop, businesses took a cautious approach to hiring but there were clear demand hotspots for specialist tech skills including AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security, as Computer Weekly's tech recruitment outlook sets out.
So the market is selective, not slow. Employers are holding back on general headcount while competing hard for a short list of specialist capabilities. Data engineering sits right in that hotspot. When a role is this contested, every day it stays open is a day a rival can move first.
The second thing these roles price in is where the talent sits and how critical it is. IT business analysts, architects and systems designers, a group of about 193k workers, are among the occupations in critical demand, with three out of five indicators in critical demand in 2025, according to the Occupations in demand 2025 data on GOV.UK. These are the people who design the systems data engineers build and feed.
Geography concentrates the pressure further. London accounts for 80 percent of AI-related job postings and nearly two-thirds of all technology vacancies in the UK, The Register reports, citing Accenture. That clustering shapes both competition and expectation: candidates in and around the capital see more options, and employers outside it have to work harder to be seen.
Pay is the third signal, and it splits by segment. Top technology firms can pay sizeable wages to skilled migrants, leading to wages far above the salary threshold, while pay for engineering professionals on the Skilled Worker route is broadly in line with the UK average, according to the Migration Advisory Committee's report on IT and engineering professionals. In short, the headline-grabbing offers come from a narrow band of firms, while most engineering roles track closer to the norm.
The fourth thing a live role prices in is retention risk, and it is the one most employers underweight. A striking 79 percent of UK technical professionals plan to change employers in 2026, according to recruitment firm Rise Technical's 2025/26 Insights Report, which surveyed over 500 employers and 1000 candidates. If four in five of your target hires are already looking, speed and clarity matter more than ever.
So hire well by doing a few things deliberately. Write the role around outcomes, not a wish list of tools, so you widen the pool without lowering the bar. Define your must-have skills against the systems you actually run, and separate them from the nice-to-haves. Move quickly once someone strong appears, because the best people are interviewing elsewhere. And treat the first offer as a conversation, not a test, since you are courting people who have choices.
