The picture is cautious but far from flat. Against a subdued 2025 economic backdrop, businesses took a careful approach to hiring, yet there were clear demand hotspots for specialist tech skills including AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security, according to Computer Weekly's tech recruitment outlook for 2026.
Government forecasting points the same way. Digital, engineering and construction occupations appear most commonly among priority occupations, many already experiencing high recruitment demand and expected to keep growing strongly, per Skills England's annual skills report 2026. Looking further out, occupations in digital, adult social care, construction and engineering have the greatest additional employment demand between 2025 and 2030, according to Skills England's assessment of priority skills to 2030.
So why does hiring still feel hard? Because the demand is real and the supply is tight. 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, with technical and specialist sustainability skills topping the list, reports the Institution of Engineering and Technology. At the same time, the people you already employ are restless: 79% of UK technical professionals plan to change employers in 2026, according to Rise Technical's 2025/26 Insights Report, which surveyed over 500 employers and 1,000 candidates.
The single biggest shift is AI capability inside the squad. Demand for AI skills increased nearly 200 percent in a year, with London accounting for 80 percent of AI-related job postings and nearly two-thirds of all technology vacancies in the UK, reports The Register, citing Accenture data. That pull is reshaping squads around people who can build, ship and secure AI-enabled products, not just maintain them.
The other shift is the shape of the pyramid. The UK tech sector cut graduate jobs by 46 percent in the past year, with a further 53 percent drop projected, according to figures from the Institute of Student Employers reported by The Register. Entry-level is thinning fastest: in engineering, entry-level hiring has fallen to -19% while senior hiring sits at -10%, a 9-percentage-point gap, per GOV.UK's snapshot of entry-level hiring in the UK.
Put those together and you get the squad shape employers are advertising for in 2026: smaller, senior-weighted teams where each person carries a specialism. Fewer generalist junior slots, more mid-to-senior engineers who can own AI, data, enterprise applications or cyber security end to end. The risk is obvious. If everyone chases senior specialists and no one builds juniors, the pipeline you need in 2028 simply will not exist.
Start with the shape, not the headcount. Map the specialisms your product actually needs, AI, data, enterprise applications, cyber security, then decide which must be senior and which can be grown. With 76% of engineering employers struggling to recruit for key roles, per the IET, a clear skills map helps you compete for the few people who fit rather than reposting a vague job ad.
Move quickly and treat retention as recruitment. With 79% of UK technical professionals planning to change employers in 2026, according to Rise Technical, your own team is part of the open market. A slow, uncertain hiring process loses the strong people first, so keep stages short, feedback fast and expectations honest.
And don't abandon the junior rung entirely. Graduate hiring is down sharply, with a 46 percent cut in the past year, per the Institute of Student Employers via The Register, which means the next few years will squeeze mid-level supply. Employers who keep bringing on and growing junior engineers now are quietly building the senior squad they will need later.
