Scope, neglectedness, tractability: a hiring lens

Scope, neglectedness and tractability is a prioritisation lens borrowed from effective altruism that helps you rank AI transformation roles by how much a hire matters, how under-resourced the problem is, and how likely a good appointment is to solve it.

What does AI transformation hiring look like right now?

Demand is sharp and concentrated. AI skills grew nearly 200 percent in a year, with London accounting for 80 percent of AI-related job postings and nearly two-thirds of all technology vacancies in the UK, according to Accenture data reported by The Register. That tells you two things: the problem is large, and the talent is clustered, which makes it easy to overspend attention on visible roles and miss the under-served ones.

The direction of travel is clear too. Government projections put the net change in AI-related occupations at roughly 696,000 jobs in the Automation Scenario to 1,072,000 in the Technological Opportunities Scenario, with replacement demand rising from 3,077,000 to 3,193,000 jobs, as set out by GOV.UK labour market and skills projections. Even the lower end is a big number, and replacement demand alone keeps the pipeline busy for years.

Budgets, though, stayed cautious. Against a subdued 2025 economic backdrop businesses took a careful approach to hiring, but there were demand hotspots for specialist skills including AI, data, enterprise applications and cyber security, reports Computer Weekly's tech recruitment outlook for 2026. So you are prioritising, not spending freely. That is exactly where a ranking lens earns its keep.

Which AI transformation roles carry the most weight?

Scope asks how much a role matters if you get it right. The roles that translate AI into working systems score high. IT business analysts, architects and systems designers, a group of around 193,000 workers, are among the occupations in critical demand, with three out of five indicators in critical demand in 2025, according to GOV.UK occupations in demand data. These are the people who turn a model into a process other teams can actually use.

Neglectedness asks who else is competing for the same person, and where the thin spots are. Cyber security is a telling example. There are approximately 143,000 individuals in the UK cyber security workforce, with growth moderately accelerating from 2 percent in 2022 to 5 percent in 2024, as measured by GOV.UK cyber security skills data. A workforce growing that slowly against rising AI-driven risk is a neglected, high-scope gap worth prioritising.

Tractability asks how solvable the hire is. The 80 percent London concentration in the Accenture figures reported by The Register means a purely local search for core AI roles is crowded and hard. Widening your geography and considering remote or hybrid options raises tractability without lowering scope.

How do you apply the lens to hire well?

Start by scoring each open role one to five on scope, neglectedness and tractability, then rank them. A role that is high-scope, neglected and tractable goes to the top of the list this week. A high-scope role that nobody can currently fill still matters, but it needs a different plan: build the skill internally, or redesign the role so it becomes tractable.

Then act on the market signals. Because specialist AI, data and cyber skills are the demand hotspots in Computer Weekly's 2026 outlook, move quickly on strong matches and keep your process short. Because replacement demand alone runs into the millions in the GOV.UK projections, build a pipeline for roles you will need again, rather than treating each vacancy as a one-off.

  • Scope: what breaks or improves if this role is filled well?
  • Neglectedness: how many employers chase this exact profile, and where is the thin spot?
  • Tractability: can we realistically find, assess and close this hire in weeks, not quarters?
  • Re-score monthly, because the market moves and your ranking should move with it.
