UK manufacturing is short of people, and the gap is expensive. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year Make UK – Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025. That shortage is now the single biggest brake on technology adoption. Over 50% of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption, and only 2% say AI is widely embedded across their operations The Manufacturer / Make UK – AI, Skills and the Future of UK Manufacturing.
So the picture is a sector keen to automate but held back by the people it needs to make automation work. That tension is exactly where quality roles sit today, and it shapes how smart employers are hiring.
Automation and digitalisation are already changing what manufacturing work involves. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cited automation and half (50%) cited wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs Make UK – 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap. When an agent reads inspection data, flags anomalies and compiles the first-pass report, the engineer stops being a human scanner and starts being a decision-maker.
That shift rewards a different skill set. 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK – 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap. Rather than cutting headcount, many firms are retraining their own people: 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation, and that figure increases for firms with more than 1,000 employees Make UK Executive Survey 2026.
There's plenty of headroom. The UK ranks just 24th in global robotics density, and targeted innovation and digital investment could add £150 billion to the UK's GDP by 2035 Making it Smarter: Global Lessons for Accelerating Automation and Digital Adoption in UK Manufacturing - Make UK. That under-use is a reason the quality engineer's role still has so much room to grow.
Start by hiring for judgement, not just tool familiarity. If an agent handles the reading of inspection data, the value a person adds is interpreting it: deciding what an out-of-tolerance result means, tracing root cause and improving the process. The UK's low robotics uptake, at only 101 robots per 10,000 workers in 2020, shows how much interpretation and change work is still waiting to be done Smart Machines Strategy 2035 - GOV.UK.
Then write job adverts around the future shape of the role. Describe the cognitive and problem-solving skills you want, name the data and quality systems the person will work alongside, and be honest that the role is changing. With skills shortages holding back AI adoption for more than half of manufacturers The Manufacturer / Make UK – AI, Skills and the Future of UK Manufacturing, the firms that describe growth and retraining clearly will win the strongest applicants.
