Defending the price: in hiring, the price is the hire

When you defend the price of hiring, you're really defending the value of the person you place on the line, because in manufacturing a wrong hire costs far more than the work of finding the right one.

How bad is the manufacturing hiring gap right now?

The gap is wide, and it's expensive. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year Make UK's Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025. That figure reframes the whole conversation about the price of hiring: an empty seat on the line is not free, it's a daily drain on output.

Skills shortages sit at the top of the barrier list too. Manufacturers name skills shortages (75%), recruitment (36%) and talent retention (32%) as their leading barriers to growth Barclays Corporate's research on the skills shortage in UK manufacturing. When three of your biggest growth blockers are about people, the work of finding and keeping the right person is not a cost centre. It's the growth strategy.

Which roles and skills are changing fastest in manufacturing?

The shape of the work is shifting under manufacturers' feet. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cite automation and half (50%) cite wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK's 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap report. In plain terms, meta-cognitive skills mean the ability to learn, adapt and solve problems, not just repeat a task.

Many firms are responding by reshaping the teams they already have. 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation, a figure that rises for firms with more than 1,000 employees Make UK's Executive Survey 2026. But upskilling only goes so far when the technology itself is held back. Over 50% of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption, and only 2% say AI is widely embedded across their operations The Manufacturer's coverage of Make UK research. The talent gap and the technology gap are the same gap.

The prize for closing it is real. The UK ranks just 24th in global robotics density, and targeted innovation and digital investment could add £150 billion to the UK's GDP by 2035 Make UK's Making it Smarter report. The people who can install, run and improve that technology are exactly the hires that matter most right now.

How do you hire well in manufacturing?

Start by pricing the empty seat, not just the process. With 55,000 long-term vacancies costing £6bn in lost output every year Make UK, every week a role stays open has a number attached to it. That reframes speed and quality as the same goal: the faster you find the right person, the less output you lose.

Then hire for adaptability, not just the current task. With 74% of manufacturers expecting demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to rise by 2030 Make UK, the best hire is someone who can grow into automation and digital tools rather than someone whose skills fit only today's line. Ask about how people learn, not just what they already know.

  • Define the role around outcomes and the skills the work will need in two years, not only the ones it needs this week.
  • Widen the search beyond your usual pool, because the shortage means the right person may not be actively looking.
  • Move quickly once you find a match, since delay is what turns a vacancy into lost output.
  • Blend hiring and upskilling, so new people raise the bar for the team you already have.

When you do all of that well, the price of getting the right person is small next to the price of the wrong one, or of no one at all. The price is the hire. What you pay to find and place someone is a fraction of the value they bring, and a fraction of what an empty seat costs.
