What does manufacturing hiring look like right now?

Hiring is tight, and the gap is costing real money. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year Make UK – Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025. Those aren't temporary gaps. They are roles that stay open long enough to hold back output.

Skills shortages sit at the top of the growth barrier list. Manufacturers name skills shortages (75%), recruitment (36%) and talent retention (32%) as their biggest obstacles to growth Barclays Corporate – Skills shortage in UK Manufacturing. When three of the top barriers are all about people, hiring well stops being an HR task and becomes a growth strategy.

Engineering, the backbone of reprocessing, feels it most. 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, with technical and specialist sustainability skills topping the list Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Plastics reprocessing sits right where engineering meets sustainability, so it draws on exactly the skills that are hardest to find.

Which roles and skills matter most in reprocessing plants?

The work is changing shape, not just growing. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cite automation and half (50%) cite wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK – 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap. In a reprocessing plant that means process technicians who can read data, operators who manage automated sorting lines, and engineers who tune machines for recycled feedstock.

There is room to grow, too. The UK ranks just 24th in global robotics density, and targeted innovation and digital investment could add £150 billion to the UK's GDP by 2035 Making it Smarter: Global Lessons for Accelerating Automation and Digital Adoption in UK Manufacturing - Make UK. As plants add automation to sorting, washing and extrusion, they need people who can run and maintain it, which is where fresh skills enter the plant floor.

National demand backs this up. Occupations in Digital, Adult Social Care, Construction and Engineering show the greatest additional employment demand between 2025 and 2030 GOV.UK - Assessment of priority skills to 2030 (Skills England). Reprocessing pulls from the digital and engineering ends of that list, so plants compete for the same people as the wider economy.

How do you hire well in manufacturing today?

Start by writing the job around the skills you actually need, not the title you have always used. With 74% of manufacturers expecting demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to rise by 2030 Make UK – 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap, a reprocessing role today might blend hands-on machine knowledge with problem-solving and data skills. Be clear about which parts you will train and which you need on day one.

Then move quickly. With 55,000 long-term vacancies open across the sector Make UK – Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025, the best people rarely stay available for long. A slow process loses them. Shortlist on evidence, book interviews early, and keep people informed at every step.

Finally, treat retention as part of hiring. Talent retention is a top-three barrier to growth for manufacturers (32%) Barclays Corporate – Skills shortage in UK Manufacturing, so the way you onboard and develop people shapes whether your next vacancy comes round sooner or later. Clear progression into automation and sustainability roles helps people stay.
