What does the latest data say about manufacturing hiring?

The backdrop is cautious, but it's steadying. Early estimates for May to July 2026 suggest a decrease of 6,000 (0.8%) vacancies to 707,000 across the UK ONS - Vacancies and jobs in the UK, August 2026. That follows a similar move the quarter before, with vacancies down 7,000 (0.9%) to 712,000 for April to June 2026 ONS - Vacancies and jobs in the UK.

Look back a year and the drop is sharper: total estimated vacancies were down by 76,000 (9.5%) in December 2025 to February 2026 from a year earlier, decreasing in 15 of the 18 sectors ONS – Vacancies and jobs in the UK (March 2026). The market is best read as 'low hire, low fire', with weaker recruitment but only slight increases in redundancies and vacancies below pre-pandemic levels Low Pay Commission Report 2025, GOV.UK. Against that, a run of steady plant payroll growth stands out as genuine, consistent demand.

Which manufacturing roles and dynamics are driving demand?

Hiring hasn't stopped, it's become more selective. There are 2.5 unemployed people per vacancy in March to May 2026, a ratio that has held at 2.5 since July to September 2025 after rising quarter on quarter from July to September 2024 ONS - Vacancies and jobs in the UK. For production employers, that means a deeper pool for roles like machine operators, maintenance technicians, quality inspectors and shift supervisors, but still real competition for skilled and ticketed people.

Flexibility is part of the story too. Permanent placements have finally stabilised, ending a decline in place since Liz Truss's premiership 45 months ago, while temporary billings increased for a fourth consecutive month REC / KPMG Report on Jobs (S&P Global). For plant managers, that points to a practical mix: temporary and shift cover to ride demand peaks, alongside permanent hires for the skilled roles you need to keep.

How do you hire well in manufacturing right now?

Start with the shift reality, not a generic job advert. Spell out hours, patterns, site location and the exact tickets or certificates a role needs. Skilled production people compare offers quickly, so clarity up front saves time on both sides.

Then move fast. In a 'low hire, low fire' market, the best maintenance and quality candidates are often in work already Low Pay Commission Report 2025, GOV.UK. A tidy process, a quick first conversation and a clear decision keep them engaged. Plan your temporary cover for peaks and your permanent hires for the capability you want to build, so payroll growth reflects the right roles and not just headcount.
