Manufacturing is hiring under real pressure. In 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year according to Make UK's Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025. The shortage runs deep into engineering specifically: 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, with technical and specialist sustainability skills topping the list the Institution of Engineering and Technology found in 2025.
This matters because the same skills gap is now slowing automation. Over 50% of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption, and only 2% say AI is widely embedded across their operations The Manufacturer reported from a 2026 Make UK study. So when integrators interview, they're hiring against a double shortage: engineers who understand the plant, and engineers who can work with the agents that run it.
The job is changing shape. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cited automation and half (50%) cited wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK set out in its 2030 Skills report. In plain terms, employers want people who can reason, adapt and supervise systems, not just follow a fixed procedure.
The hiring pool is also widening. Apprenticeships have risen from 3% of AI hires in 2020 to 19% in 2025 the GOV.UK AI Labour Market Survey 2025 shows, so integrators are increasingly interviewing earlier-career engineers alongside seasoned ones. Many firms are also growing talent from within: 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation found the Make UK Executive Survey 2026.
Start with scenarios, not trivia. Describe an agent that misbehaves on the line, say a vision-based inspection agent that starts rejecting good parts, and ask the person to walk you through how they'd diagnose it, contain it and decide whether to intervene manually. You're testing judgement under uncertainty, which is exactly the cognitive and meta-cognitive skill set employers expect to need more of per Make UK's 2030 Skills report.
Keep the door wide. With 76% of engineering employers struggling to recruit for key roles as the IET reported in 2025, a rigid checklist filters out good people too early. Weigh potential and learning speed alongside experience, especially given the national push behind it: during London Tech Week 2025, the UK government announced a partnership to upskill 7.5 million UK workers in essential AI skills by 2030, equivalent to around 20% of the UK workforce techUK reported in 2025.
