The headroom for growth is huge, and that's the opportunity. The UK sits just 24th in the world for robotics density, and targeted innovation and digital investment could add £150 billion to the UK's GDP by 2035 Make UK's Making it Smarter report (2025). That gap is longstanding: UK utilisation of industrial robots substantially lags internationally, at only 101 robots per 10,000 workers in 2020 the Smart Machines Strategy 2035 (GOV.UK, 2025).
Closing that gap is now a skills problem more than a technology one. Over 50% of manufacturers cite skills shortages as the main barrier to AI adoption, and only 2% say AI is widely embedded across their operations The Manufacturer, reporting Make UK research (2026). In other words, the machines are ready before the people are, which puts engineers who understand automation in a strong position.
Demand is broad and rising. Digital, engineering and construction occupations appear most commonly among priority occupations, many already experiencing high recruitment demand and expected to keep growing strongly Skills England's annual skills report 2026. Engineering is also named among the occupations with the greatest additional employment demand between 2025 and 2030 Skills England's assessment of priority skills to 2030 (2025).
The nature of the work is shifting too. Six in ten (59%) manufacturers cited automation and half (50%) cited wider digitalisation as trends changing jobs and skills needs, and 74% expect demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK's 2030 Skills: Closing the Gap report (2024). Employers are responding by growing their own talent: 40% of manufacturers are looking to upskill their existing workforce, specifically for redeployment as a result of automation and digitalisation, a figure that rises for firms with more than 1,000 employees Make UK's Executive Survey 2026.
For engineers early in their careers, the picture is mixed but revealing. In Engineering, entry-level hiring has fallen to -19% while senior hiring sits at -10%, a 9-percentage-point gap a GOV.UK snapshot of entry-level hiring (2026). That gap signals how much employers value proven, specialist automation skills, and why building a path from junior to specialist matters.
Start by accepting that the talent is scarce and hard to source. 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, with technical and specialist sustainability skills topping the list the Institution of Engineering and Technology (2025). Skills shortages (75%), recruitment (36%) and talent retention (32%) rank as manufacturers' top barriers to growth Barclays Corporate (2024). The cost of waiting is real: in 2025 there were 55,000 unfilled long-term vacancies in UK manufacturing, costing the economy £6bn in lost output every year Make UK's Industrial Strategy Skills Commission Report 2025.
So hire for the fundamentals and train for the specifics. With 74% of manufacturers expecting demand for cognitive and meta-cognitive skills to increase by 2030 Make UK's 2030 Skills report (2024), problem-solving and adaptability matter as much as hands-on robotics experience. Pair that with the 40% of manufacturers planning to upskill and redeploy existing staff Make UK's Executive Survey 2026, and a smart strategy blends external hiring with internal development.
Look close to home, too. For the Engineering profession, the vast majority of new hires come from the resident labour force, indicating low reliance on international recruitment a GOV.UK review of professionals in IT and engineering (2025). That means the domestic market is competitive, so speed and reach decide who secures the right people first.
When the resident talent pool is this contested, reach and speed matter. We search 15 million candidates to find the engineers who can design, install and run automated foundry systems, and we manage the process end to end: a ranked shortlist in under 30 seconds, matched people contacted in under a minute, and an interview booked in under three minutes. Our recruitment agent manages recruitment end to end for 8% on a successful hire, with no monthly fee and no upfront cost, through Reed.ai. Ready to build your automation team?
