

Demand for technical people is still one of the tightest corners of the labour market. In the latest data, the ONS reported that the largest volume increase in vacancies over August to October 2025 was in the professional, scientific and technical activities sector, which rose by 5,000. That's the space where most engineering roles sit, and it tells you employers are still fighting hard for specialist skills.
The wider market has cooled, which makes the pull on technical roles stand out more. The ONS also noted that total vacancies fell by 7,000 in the second quarter of 2026, with professional, scientific and technical activities among the sectors seeing the largest drops. So the picture is mixed: overall hiring has eased, yet competition for genuinely scarce engineering skills remains sharp. Slower headline numbers don't mean an easier search when you need a rare specialism.
Confidence across recruitment has softened too, according to the KPMG and REC UK Report on Jobs for June 2026. When budgets tighten, the cost of a slow or wrong technical hire climbs, because every extra week a critical role stays open holds back a project. That's the real pressure engineering leaders feel now.
The talent pipeline is changing shape at the entry point. techUK highlighted that Adzuna has seen a 30% drop in UK entry-level job postings since ChatGPT launched, with graduates facing the toughest job market since 2018. Fewer junior openings today means a thinner pool of mid and senior engineers in a few years, so the scramble for experienced talent is only set to intensify.
Employers are also rethinking how they build skills in-house. GOV.UK and DSIT found that apprenticeships have risen from 3% of AI hires in 2020 to 19% in 2025. That shift shows technical teams growing their own talent when the open market can't supply enough people, particularly in fast-moving areas like AI and data engineering.
Engineering demand spreads across more sectors than many realise. GOV.UK estimated that MOD expenditure with industry supported 272,000 direct jobs in 2023/24, an 11% rise on the year before, and much of that work is engineering-heavy. Add the digital sector, where DSIT tracks filled jobs across the UK, and you can see the same scarce candidates being chased by defence, tech and infrastructure employers at once.
Start with a brief that describes the work, not a wish list. List the two or three technical skills the role genuinely needs, the tools and stacks in daily use, and the problems the person will solve in their first quarter.
